Week 39

Hey,

Officially 9 months post surgery and fully back training and ready to play. In ways this time has flown and in other ways it's been exceptionally frustrating but I have definitely learned a lot from it and I'm going to list them here.

When I originally injured my knee I was incredibly grateful to so many people for basically just being there and being helpful, my family, friends and surprisingly people I didn't know.
What I have learned from this experience is as follows.

1. Stay as positive as you can. How you perceive something determines how you react and by putting a positive spin on as much as I could it helped me to recognise the 'little wins' as opposed to seeing only negatives.

2. Set small goals. I set myself goals every single week and it helped me to have something to strive towards and to feel some sense of achievement no matter how small. I was used to being held accountable by being a member of a team so it was a lot more self driven to be honest.

3. Find a training partner if possible. I was so lucky to have Conor's help for pretty much the whole time and continue to do so. I find training with somebody far better than on my own so that was absolutely huge.

4. Stay involved with your team. Again I was very fortunate that Clare camogie and Clare football teams were incredibly helpful to me for the entire 9 months, with physio, s&c training, sports performance coaches and overall kindness was brilliant. Having something to do each week and to feel involved (despite being injured) was very helpful.

5. Do things you wouldn't normally do. I had the opportunity to go to Kolkata with the HOPE Foundation this year, spend a lot more time with my family, work in the Gaeltacht etc.

6. Family and friends are key. My parents Margaret and Fintan, my brother and sister Nigel and Melanie and then John have been great. I found the start of the injury very difficult and found it hard to believe I was going to be out of sport for pretty much a year (from injury date) but they are sound folk and took my mind off it whenever I needed, recorded videos for me on a weekly basis and  read all my blogs haha (I asked them questions for proof :)).

7. Get an animal haha.
Charlie is my saviour. Anybody who knows me knows I'm obsessed with him haha he's kept me going right from the start :).

A long but quick 9 months! Thanks for following :).
